Beast vs. Xavier

the key to creating a successful illustration is having a good premise. the next step is to find reference from real life. and lastly, the hardest part is the execution of the idea.

one problem that comes up over and over again is the difficulty of blurring the lines between separate pieces of reference. you must avoid making a piece that looks like a cutout collage. sure, a few tweaks in photoshop helps but how much? this is where drawing ability and memory comes into play. when combining photo reference with hand drawn material, you must make the photo reference look more like a hand drawing and make the hand drawing look more like a photo. some where in between, the two pieces will meet and blend together as if they were one. the seams should disappear and your idea shine through. techniques and processes of creation are hidden from the surface and the magical life appears on your canvas as if the characters are living and breathing the same air the audience is. this is what i want to achieve. it's been a struggle but i'm beginning to understand what it takes.

here's my idea for the San Diego Comic Con Art Show.

if i hurry, i'll be able to finish two drawings and this will be one. I will color it of course.
